When I originally thought of the idea of starting a site for CBGD, I wanted to focus exclusively on that. But during my research I found that such diseases such as Multiple  system Atrophy and PSP had so many similarities with CBGD that I decided to include them on this site. I’m pretty sure that I will come across more syndromes and diseases.

 

Differences between CBGD, SupraNuclear Palsey(PSP), and Parkinson’s

Although CBGD(corticobasal ganglionic degeneration) and PSP(progressive supranuclear palsey)are in  Parkinson’s family. The symptoms can be similar and I just wanted point out some differences.

Parkinson’s: Symptoms may start around the age of 40 or younger. It can start slowly and progress slowly. Some symptoms  are stiffness, rigidity, a stiff or masked expressions on the face,  tremors or uncontrollable  movements.  There are drugs that can help control or slow the progression of Parkinson’s.  Progressive SupraNuclear Palsy:  symptoms are similar to Parkinson’s but what distinguishes it is the inability to move eyes up or down or even keeping their eyelids open.  Progression of the disease causes difficulty with swallowing and speech.  There is no cure and treatment is geared towards maintaining quality of life.

Corticobasal Ganglionic Degeneration:  There is rigidity and stiffness like Parkinson’s  but is usually centered on one side of the body. There are speech problems as the disease progresses. Patients also experience uncontrollable leg or arm movements also referred to as ‘alien limb.’  There is no cure and the drugs used for Parkinson’s don’t seem to work for CBGD. The goal here is to focus  on maintaining quality of life as long as possible.

I just wanted to add one more syndrome to the Parkinson’t list: MSA(multiple system atrophy) while it is similar to Parkinson’s this disease can also affect the heart , blood pressure and other autonomic functions. The cause is not known and seems to predominantly affect men.
